Sunday, September 23:
Departure of Fritz, who cannot get over his surprise at R.'s cheerfulness and good spirits.
After lunch I went with R. for a walk in the palace gardens. He tells me that these gardens have a connection with his work, as localities always do - there is a modulation, for instance, in the girls' school on the corner.
On our return home he writes all sorts of letters, among others to Herr Pollini, who has written to him about presenting his works in London, saying there is no sacrifice he would not willingly undertake in order to do it. R. of course refuses, but reminds the impresario of his "German" obligations; in the same connection he writes to Herr Voltz, exhorting him to protect all his rights in this matter.
An embarrassing altercation with the governess, who has given vent to her bad temper. In the evening R. plays a splendid theme and says he would be able to play me the whole prelude if he had yet written it in ink.
