Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 22, 1877

Overview

R. undergoes another dental procedure with good patience, even remarking that he had been composing during the treatment, and Mr. Jenkins leaves without accepting payment. The day is also occupied by school business, including talks with local officials and correspondence about finding a suitable organizer, while the family receives both a shameless open letter and a pleasant note.

Content

Saturday, September 22:

Another operation. R. bears it patiently and says that yesterday, while it was going on, he was composing!

Departure of Mr. Jenkins, who utterly declines to accept any money from R. In the afternoon R. has a conference about the school with the mayor and Herr Feustel, after which he writes to his friend Klindworth to see whether he can secure him for it.

An open letter to my father from Herr Hiller, sent to us by Herr Lesimple, reveals once more to our astonished eyes how far impudence can go in its lack of shame or self-reproach. A nice letter to me from Herr von Wolzogen.
