Sunday, July 22:
Departure in the early morning, arrival in Nürnberg at 11 o'clock; with R. and the children visited the town hall, the Church of Saint Sebald and the wonderful Church of Saint Lorenz, the fortress, etc.
Meistersinger atmosphere; near Hans Sachs's house found the street of the second act again. Unfortunately, the Hans Sachs Platz much disfigured by the synagogue, insolent and sumptuous.
On the Rosenau common a small crowd gathers to see R. In the evening the enthusiastic music master; R., however, flaring up when he is told of the love the Nürnberg people bear him, recalls that Die Meistersinger was played here last of all, that, when he offered it to the theater in aid of the Hans Sachs monument, without demanding anything for himself, he did not even receive a reply. Then he is vexed with himself over his useless rage.
