Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 21, 1877

Overview

The day in Munich shifted quickly from practical negotiations to the decision to depart the next morning, since nothing more could be accomplished there. Visits with local figures and a drive through the city were colored by fatigue, financial uncertainty, and a melancholy report that Semper was close to death.

Saturday, July 21:

Munich. At 8 o'clock Councilor Diifilipp, I go out, so that R. can speak to him more unrestrainedly and show the children the city. When I come home, R. declares, to my surprise, that we will leave tomorrow, since we have nothing more to do here.

The King has given no instructions of any sort with regard to our affair, and since he himself is in financial difficulties, he is just afraid of being obliged to pay further advances, indeed also of not getting his advances back. Councilor DiiflElipp suggests that R. talk to Herr von Perfall; R. consents, and at 11 goes to Dufflipp's office; Herr v. P. voices lengthy protestations of respect, R. replies that he is willing to accept him as a new acquaintance.

It is proposed that the Munich theater management present the festival next year in Bayreuth, and then in Munich. This proposal is now to be worked out between Herr v. P. and Diiffl. R. says to me, “I must be glad that, when the master sends me away, the servants give me something to eat!”

Drive with R., the children, and friend Lenbach through the English Garden and the older parts of Munich. Sad news of Semper, who is nearing his end; it is terrible to see the emergence of this mad craving for life, after everything that makes life horrible has been tried and all illusions concerning it have been lost!
