Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 15, 1877

Overview

R. began the morning by reflecting on how completely life depends on having the other person present. The day stayed wet and subdued, though it ended with a brief encounter with Grant and his family, which was memorable mainly for the language barrier.

Sunday, July 15:

R. goes early in the morning to the fountain, Fontaine de Soif, then breakfast. As he is resting a while and reflecting, he exclaims to me, “All of it is possible only because I have you; even peace and solitude appeal to me only when I can tell myself that you are with me.”

A wet day; in the evening, the arrival of General Grant and his family, and we have a short meeting with him. He can speak neither German nor French!
