Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 14, 1877

Overview

Sleep was uneasy, and the writer woke with a sense that their happiness had become almost too intense to trust. After visits from friends and a walk, the evening conversation drifted to London and the unevenness of human goodwill, leaving a thoughtful and somewhat guarded impression.

Saturday, July 14:

R. did not have a good night. I went to bed with strange forebodings. Chance always brings three lights into my room, and the happiness we are feeling here I find almost alarming.

R. had what he calls his “dreams of cowardice”: lack of money, contemptuous treatment by other people, my wish to have nothing more to do with him.

Visit from our friends Pohl, Nohl, and Heckel. Went for a walk to the Wolfsbrunnen. Conversed in the evening. R. talks about London and says he had the feeling of much individual good will, to which he was unable to respond.
