Content

Monday, July 16:

Drive to Heilbronn. The town hall and the Church of Saint Kilian make an impression, particularly the altarpiece carved in wood; R. is utterly captivated by the four figures, pope and cardinal below, and two bishops. I am also much fascinated by the Death of Mary and by what I take to be the Ascent to Heaven.

A strange impression in the house of Justinus Kerner: a pretty woman, clearly dressed for a social occasion; a rather mysterious house; an excited, mesmerizing court councillor; an interesting picture of the visionary of Prevorst; and a fine portrait by Lenbach.
