Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 23, 1877

Overview

Children's lessons and assorted tasks were overshadowed by discouraging news from England, where both artistic and financial uncertainties continued to grow. Troubles with singers and contracts added to the anxiety, though a letter from Loldi and slightly better weather offered a small lift.

Content

Monday, April 23:

Lessons for the children and various things; news from England not very encouraging, a request to remove Tristan from the program, and the tiny double basses are said not to sound well. On top of that there is still great uncertainty on the business side, and Messrs. Hodge and Essex are certainly in no position to deposit the guaranteed sum. Some of the singers to whom contracts have been sent are behaving very injudiciously, and we are leaving in a state of worry.

First letter from Loldi! Somewhat nicer weather, though still not spring-like.
