Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 22, 1877

Overview

The morning brought heavy thoughts, followed by detailed discussion of how to release the works to theaters while still protecting Bayreuth's future festival. Richard then pushed forward with letters and telegrams to secure rights and support, while the writer focused on buying him time to finish Parsifal.

Sunday, April 22:

R. says he wakes up feeling heavy, and with such heavy thoughts. We discuss the release of the works to the various theaters and come to the conclusion that it would be a good thing, for the sake of the Society of Patrons now being established, to insist on a clause in the contracts with the various theaters to the effect that, should the Society succeed in its efforts to achieve a repetition of the festival, the theaters holding rights in the work should support this festival, enabling a sort of model performance to be given here in Bayreuth.

R. also writes in this vein to Councilor Dufflipp, offering the decorations, costumes, and machinery in repayment of the advance; or he might sell all these things to the theater director in Leipzig and then pay the money to the King. R. cables to Dr. Forster, asking him at last to engage Unger and thereby to secure the performing rights for Leipzig, with priority in all North Germany. R. says he now sees his way a little more clearly; he is also demanding support for his festival in Bayreuth on a cooperative basis, should the Societies of Patrons have raised funds for it. Amen.

I have only one thought in mind: the possibility of gaining time for R. to work, and the hope of seeing Parsifal completed. We start on Lope’s La quinta de Florencia, but without enjoyment. It lacks warmth.
