Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 25, 1877

Overview

After lessons and letters, Richard finally received approval for Unger’s engagement, easing one major concern. Even so, a reading from Calderon left them repelled by its strained religious ornamentation, sharpening their longing for Parsifal instead.

Wednesday, April 25:

Lessons for the children and letters. R. receives the consent for Herr Unger’s engagement in exchange for rights in the Nibelungen, which is one great burden the less. From friend Standhartner a telegram saying that neither the Prince nor the management is raising any significant objections to R.’s proposals: ten percent, 20,000 marks advance.

In the evening we take up an auto by Calderon (Llamados y escogidos) and are downright appalled by its Jesuitical ornaments, its hair-splitting, superficial depiction of religious matters. Oh, Parsifal!
