Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 24, 1876

Overview

R. recovered enough to talk warmly about his childhood while breakfasting, and the morning moved on to lessons, correspondence, and a visit from Malwida, who was helping Nietzsche look for lodging. The day also brought more resentment from the press and from musicians who had been rewarded or slighted, leaving the household once again under attack.

Tuesday, October 24:

R. had a good night, and at the breakfast table tells us a lot about his childhood years: Eisleben, Possendorf, his cousin Fredi, giving free lessons, etc. Then lessons for the children on my part, while R. has to write a reply to the Berlin horn player. The King bestowed medals on three players (the concertmaster Grützmacher, the oboist Wieprecht, and Fleischhauer), these do not write to thank R., but all the others attack him!

Visit from Malwida, who is looking for an apartment for her friend Nietzsche and inspects several houses. She returns to Naples in the evening. Conversation with R.
