Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 25, 1876

Overview

A cheerful morning gave way to work with the children, bathing, and R.'s reading and letters as he continued to labor over his preface and his reply to Monod. The afternoon walk along the shore felt almost like belonging there, but the evening brought another wave of nasty criticism and petty slander in the papers.

Wednesday, October 25:

R. is well as a result of a good night. Cheerful breakfast, then lessons for the children and bathing for me. R. reads through his preface for Villot, since he is preparing a reply to Herr Monod’s letter. He also reads the Républiques italiennes, with great sympathy for the town of Pisa and the hero Castruccio.

Lovely walk in the afternoon with the children and R.; we wander for two hours along the water’s edge, where I already feel entirely at home. Return home in a thunderstorm.

In the evening I glanced again through several books forwarded to us; the recognition of R.’s achievement is insignificant, the rest incredibly silly and perfidious. A Herr Schletterer writes in the Augsburg paper, literally inciting the orchestra players not to enter the orchestra pit and to abandon R. to his own devices! These people stir up all the base human instincts, that is the extent of their wisdom, which so lamentably abandons them as soon as they enter the world of ideas! Another little booklet by a Herr Dunkl, designed virtually as a glorification of my father, throws out in passing the remark that my brother Daniel was not at all gifted! . . .
