Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 23, 1876

Overview

Despite R.'s poor sleep, the planned outing to Pompeii with the children went very well and brought them home in good spirits. In the evening, however, she read hostile and foolish remarks about the festival and about R., even as she sensed that the performances must have moved some people deeply.

Monday, October 23:

R. complains of a restless night, but he decides to keep to the outing to Pompeii with the bevy of children. It is very successful, and, though R. and I are somewhat tired, we nevertheless return home in a very cheerful mood.

In the evening I glance through some books sent to us to look at; everything about the festival is absurd, and particularly about R. Quite apart from all this activity, R. feels there must certainly be people who were deeply moved by the performances.
