Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 22, 1876

Overview

Her thoughts turned to her father on his birthday, while R. handled correspondence for Frau Lucca. After a storm-cleared afternoon walk to Capo di Sorrento, the two talked at length, this time wandering through thoughts of the Normans.

Sunday, October 22:

“’Tis a consummation devoutly to be wish’d” — these words come into my mind as I think of my father’s birthday and wonder how he must look back on his life!

Today is a letter day for me (11!). R. writes to Frau Lucca, apologizing for not being able to give her the cuts she requested in Bologna.

In the afternoon, a lovely walk to Capo di Sorrento. A terrible thunderstorm during the night has cleared the sky and refreshed the earth. The walk does R. good; we let ourselves go in one of those endless conversations which have always taken place between us, this time about the Normans.
