Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 16, 1876

Overview

The morning was given over to Verona's squares, the arena, and a leisurely breakfast by the Adige, before I wandered on alone and was especially moved by San Zeno, San Fermo, and the city's overall charm. The evening at the Teatro Ristori was a disappointment, as the Otello performance was very poor.

Saturday, September 16:

Up early with Richard and children. Piazza dei Signori, Piazza delle Erbe, the arena, and finally breakfast a ritaliana on the banks of the Adige. Much merriment. R. returns home; I wander farther, with a porter unfortunately, and see everything imaginable. Greatest impression: San Zeno, then San Fermo. The theater is interesting, too, but above all the overall appearance of city and people, Giardino Giusti, intoxicating fragrance.

In the evening to the Teatro Ristori, Otello, very bad.
