Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 9, 1876

Overview

He felt listless but somewhat improved, while Loldi was again unwell, so he stayed in his room and took unusual pleasure in reading Walter Scott. The American organ arrived for R., and Dr. Pringsheim came about the apartments as Fricke settled in permanently as ballet master. He also repeats a harsh complaint that bad provisions are making soldiers ill and blames the suppliers.

Content

Tuesday, May 9:

Very listless, but less pain; Loldi again unwell, however. I keep to my room and read W[alter] Scott’s Count Robert of Paris with unalloyed enjoyment. R. receives the American organ; Dr. Pringsheim here on account of apartments, and our ballet master Fricke now here permanently.

Bad rations are said to have made the soldiers ill. The suppliers are all Jews, and they deliver bad bread, bad meat, etc.
