Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 8, 1876

Overview

The bad night and worsening toothache continue, relieved only slightly by leeches. Wagner has to receive Scheffsky, whose voice and character satisfy him enough to accept her as Sieglinde, and her own remarks reveal how wounded she is by Munich treatment. She presents herself as modest and hardworking, yet plainly feels the humiliation of being judged as if she will amount to nothing.

Content

Monday, May 8:

Bad night and a very wretched day with a toothache; leeches applied, some relief. R. has to receive Frl. Scheffsky, particularly recommended to him by Councillor Diifflipp as a modest and diligent girl. Her voice and personality are good, and he accepts her for Sieglinde; she complains about her position in Munich, says the King is the only one who shows her favor, and that in order that she might see who her friends were, he had sent her the conductors' and managers' reports - to the effect that 'nothing would come of her.'
