Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 10, 1876

Overview

Feeling fit enough to resume duties, he turned back to household matters and correspondence, though R. stayed away from rehearsal because of a headache. Menzel’s pictures had arrived, and Frank’s visit was unwelcome, especially for his gossip about the chaotic Tannhäuser incident in Bologna. The day also brought painful letters from disappointed people seeking admission, and Herr Herrlich’s overreaching request to sing more than just a minor role.

Content

Wednesday, May 10:

I can again pick up the reins, and I begin with the house and correspondence. R. has a headache and holds no rehearsal today. Arrival yesterday of Menzel’s pictures. R. at rehearsals.

Visit from the conductor Frank, disagreeable; he behaved badly in Munich and Mannheim. He tells us about the Tannhäuser battle in Bologna: the shouts of “Evviva Rossini,” fights, etc. The whole nonsensical affair is of little interest. Pained letters from people who cannot be admitted! Also from Herr Herrlich, who wants to sing not just a vassal, but Froh as well.
