Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 7, 1876

Overview

A severe toothache and ugly quarrels among the servants make the day miserable. Even so, she records encouraging news from abroad: Tannhäuser triumphs in London and Tristan secures another success in Berlin. The contrast between bodily pain, household discord, and public acclaim gives the entry a tense, uneven feeling.

Content

Sunday, May 7:

Violent toothache, on top of that insufferable squabbling among the servants, whereby we note that one can never staff children.

Telegram that Tannhäuser has been performed in London, in Italian, with great success; in Berlin, an extra seventh performance of Tristan, with very great success.
