Monday, April 24:

R. writes to Councilor D. for an explanation of the short telegram. Then he cables to Frau Materna, since he can no longer trust Herr Jauner.

In the evening a letter from Lilli Lehmann - Frau V. Voggenhuber is in the same condition as Frau Vogl! Everybody declares Frl. Brandt, R.’s choice, to be impossible, which is in very poor taste, since it is only because she is not pretty to look at.

[Mathilde] Mallinger is said to have declared that she would like to sing Sieglinde, so R. sent her a telegram yesterday; R. is magnificent in the way he bears all these adversities. We continue with Don Quixote in the evening, his resolution to become a shepherd.
