Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 25, 1876

Overview

No replies come from Hiilsen, Mallinger, Scheffsky, Jauner, or Materna, and the silence deepens the anxiety. Wagner writes to Lilli Lehmann about the unfair dismissal of Frl. Brandt as merely unattractive, then turns to a promising young architect before sending another firm letter to Jauner.

Content

Tuesday, April 25:

Nothing from Hülsen, nothing from Mallinger, nothing from Scheffsky, nothing from Jauner or from Materna! Great anxiety!

R. writes to Lilli Lehmann expressing his surprise at the general feeling against Frl. Brandt, solely on account of her ugliness - the inartistic flavor of this attitude.

A young architect named Stecher pleased R. greatly yesterday; his mother was one of the first devotees of Tannhäuser. He came to see the theater and waxed enthusiastic about my portrait by Lenbach and the drawing of Claire, which delighted R.

In the evening R. writes again to Herr Jauner, giving him his precise opinion, and copies his letter.
