Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 23, 1876

Overview

During lunch, a stream of telegrams brings fresh aggravation: Niemann proposes an unsuitable Sieglinde, Jauner keeps bargaining over conditions, and the King waives the audition. Even so, Feustel reports one practical success at last, with a manager finally engaged for the restaurants.

Sunday, April 23:

Around midday, while our musicians are having lunch with us, various telegrams arrive; first, from Herr Niemann, recommending for Sieglinde a Frl. v. Pretfeld, of whom all present say she would be - because of her figure alone - impossible! Then from Herr Jauner, saying he is awaiting a reply to his letter in order to come to an agreement with Frau Materna. A veritable parade of baseness!

R. refers him to his letter to Dr. Standhartner and concludes with the sentence that he hopes he will not have to prepare himself for a hostile attitude on the part of the management. At the same time he sends a telegram to Frl. Scheffsky (still for Sieglinde!).

The King cables very briefly that he will waive the audition! Herr Feustel reports that - at last - a manager has been engaged for the restaurants.
