Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 22, 1876

Overview

The Emperor’s birthday arrived with heavy snow and an alarming legal warning about the 40,000 francs that might be lost because of other clauses. I struggled to protect what mattered most, while R. drew major offers for the American march and confirmation came that Tristan had been a strong success.

Wednesday, March 22:

Emperor’s birthday with terrible snow flurries; it brings me in addition a number of business letters to write, for the lawyer informs me that the 40,000 francs due to or inherited by me are greatly endangered by the other clauses! A dismal situation, from any point of view! ... I do what is in my power to avert the loss, while protecting all that is holy to me.

R. is receiving large offers for the American march (Herr Peters 9,000 marks, which Messrs. Bote & Bock want to outbid). It is confirmed that Tristan was a great success. In the evening saw friend Bucher in uniform for the first time!
