Saturday, March 4:

Good night in the sleeping car, in Berlin at 2 o’clock; Mimi the first to greet us. The impossibility of understanding the Reich Chancellor’s attitude toward our undertaking.

Letter from a poor watchmaker’s wife in Eidenach [Einsbach?] somewhere in Bavaria. She touchingly tells R. that the prophecy of our theater’s being burned down has reached her village; she loves R. and believes him to be the King’s best friend, and for this reason she would like to beg him to take all possible steps to ensure that no such disaster occurs.

R. is very touched by this and asks me to thank the woman, which I do.
