Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 3, 1876

Overview

She began with devotional visits and social calls, then enjoyed a good dinner before leaving by train. The chorus's impromptu singing of the 'Wach' auf' chorus in the station waiting room moved her deeply, and later R. advanced the business side of the enterprise by speaking with Baron Erlanger and sending a cable to Feustel.

Content

Friday, March 3:

Made my devotions to Cano’s Saint Francis in the Museum of Applied Arts; then to Marie Donhoff and Marie Hohenlohe. After that a very nice dinner at Herr Jauner’s.

Departure at eight o’clock. The chorus was again at the station; the “Wach’ auf” chorus, wonderfully sung by them in the waiting room, leaves a very deep impression. The high room, dimly lit, this crowd of poor people suddenly bursting into sublime song, leaves behind a deep impression and a transfigured image.

Today R. spoke to Baron Erlanger about the advance; since the latter did not appear disinclined, R. cabled to Feustel, so that he can take over the business side of the affair.
