Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 8, 1876

Overview

The children’s lessons and dictation went so well that R. compared the work on the Fife to a house on fire. Later an amateur concert included Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony, and the second movement prompted his sharp joke about Tetzel and money. The music drew him into reflection even as the day remained full of labor.

Tuesday, February 8:

Children's lessons and dictation: 'We are getting on with the Fife like a house on fire,' R. says when he sees how much I have already written down.

In the evening an amateur concert, Mendelssohn's Reformation Symphony; the second movement makes R. think of Tetzel: 'When the money in the cashbox rings, the soul at once to heaven wings.'
