Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 7, 1876

Overview

R. woke in high spirits after a vivid dream about conducting a festival from a neighboring room, only to be outraged in the dream by an inserted ballet. He also received good news from Madrid about Faens(i), though the larger situation remained chaotic and comic, including the strange appearance of a bailiff. The mystery resolved into a claim against Scaria’s earnings, which at least explained his bizarre conduct, and the evening again ended with Don Quixote.

Monday, February 7:

R. wakes up whistling loudly; he had dreamed of a festival here, but of Der fliegende Holländer and Tannhäuser, and he was conducting them from a piano in a neighboring room with the help of a mirror. Around him were gathered Schröder-Devrient and others who preferred being with him to watching the performance itself, and he could not open the piano for wreaths and flowers. Suddenly he hears strange sounds and runs into the theater, where he sees Ocean Waves being performed, a ballet, so his singers tell him, by Servais, which had been inserted in Der fliegende Holländer. 'And you put up with that!' he exclaims, runs into the theater again, and lets out a mighty whistle!

Telegram from Madrid that Faens(i has been performed there with great success. Herr Hoffmann is traveling around with Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung and is not to be restrained! A bailiff arrives, and we rack our brains wondering what he wants; all sorts of possible and impossible things occur to R. Then, to our great amusement, it turns out that a woman in Vienna is laying claim to Scaria's earnings here; we are told he owes her 25,800 thalers and is under an obligation to her. At least we are glad to have an explanation for Scaria's unbelievable behavior! In the evening Don Quixote.
