Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 24, 1875

Overview

The aristocracy found fault with R. for bowing from his box, and the singers were wounded by his remarks, so the whole affair was clouded by foolish resentment. When R. visited Marie Hohenlohe she broke down in tears, begging him not to misjudge her, and his response was deeply moved; later, we finished reading The Prophetess of the Morning and both felt shaken by it.

Content

Wednesday, November 24:

All kinds of absurdities: the aristocracy vexed at R.’s taking a bow from his box, the singers hurt by his speech! R. visits Marie Hohenlohe, who pours forth to him her feelings about her fate and begs him in tears not to think ill of her! R. is very touched.

In the evening R. and I finish reading The Prophetess of the Morning, and are very much affected by it.
