Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 25, 1875

Overview

R. addressed the singers and soothed the rebellion stirred up by the newspapers, restoring a measure of peace before the second performance that evening. I was so annoyed by the absurd circumstances around us that the first two acts left me cold, but the last act lifted me into a state of reverence and relief.

Content

Thursday, November 25:

R. makes a speech to his singers, whom the newspapers have aroused to rebellion. Peace is restored, and the second performance takes place in the evening; my vexation over the foolish situation in which we have been obliged to place ourselves is so great that the first two acts leave me unaffected, but in the third I am again brought to a mood of utter devoutness and feel released from the pressures of life’s ballast!
