Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 22, 1875

Overview

R. continued to think through technical matters such as lighting, but came home in a sour temper after learning that Princess Hohenlohe had asked whether Venus's costume was meant to look Offenbach-like. I wrote to the princess on his behalf, and that evening Tannhduser went better than anyone expected, lively throughout even if not exactly as he had envisioned it.

Monday, November 22:

R. still has many observations to make, technical procedures, lighting, etc., to go into.

He returns in the afternoon very ill-humored; the costumier had told him that Princess Hohenlohe had sent a message inquiring whether Venus’s costume would be à la Offenbach; he asks me to write to the Princess about it, which I do. At half past six the performance of Tannhäuser is good beyond all expectations; nothing quite as R. really intended it, but very full of life throughout. R. often has to take a bow from his box, and at the end he appears on stage with the singers, something which always arouses feelings of embarrassment in me.
