Saturday, November 20:
Much fuss about the dress rehearsal, which takes place at 6 in the evening, though unfortunately only to R.'s sorrow! The orchestra lifeless, the ballet quite out of keeping with the music, the singers inadequate, the decorations deficient, the stage machinery bungled.
All the same, R. remains admirably calm and makes a very cordial speech to the orchestra at the end, begging their pardon for taking up their time with such an old "war horse." Richter thanks him on behalf of the orchestra, kisses his hand, and thanks him again personally for his consideration toward himself. Prince Hohenlohe introduces himself to Richard on the stage and makes some kind remarks.
