Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 3, 1875

Overview

The household is in motion again as they settle into the Hotel Imperial, while R. endures a demanding rehearsal that requires him to guide the principal singers through everything himself. The Richters are on good terms with them, and the evening ends with a performance of Carmen, which feels striking mainly for its brazenly modern French style.

Wednesday, November 3:

Moving! We are now staying in the Hotel Imperial. R. has a rehearsal at 12 o’clock and finds it a great strain, since he has to explain everything to these principal singers. Good relations with the Richters.

In the evening Carmen, a new French work, interesting for the glaringness of the modern French manner.
