Tuesday, November 2:

We decide to move, great commotion. Paid some calls; Ellen, now the wife of the Duke of Meiningen, seen for the first time in 14 years. She had news of Hans; it all sounds so sad that I feel my heart will break.

In the evening Verdi’s Requiem, about which it would certainly be best to say nothing.

All Souls’ Day today, how many have been lost to me! I spend the evening with Emilie, talking about Marie, recalling her death.
