Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 5, 1875

Overview

After working with the children and handling correspondence, including Hans’s grateful note, the writer kept the whole exchange from R. and suffered in silence. Domestic duties, from instructing the new chambermaid to feeding the guests, left little room for grief, so the day passed under a heavy, leaden burden.

Content

Monday, July 5:

Worked with the children; at 11 o’clock correspondence, among other things a note from Hans, thanking me for mine. I say nothing to R., neither about the letter nor my reply, and weep silently by myself.

As far as that is possible, for instructing the new chambermaid, attending to the feeding of our guests allow little leisure, and I perform my daily tasks as if weighed down with lead, unrelieved.
