Overview

R. struggled on with Görres’s Mysticism, finding the severe emphasis on penance almost repellent, while I attended to matters of the church carpet. The day ended more peacefully in the garden, where we looked out toward the house and felt glad of it for the children’s sake.

Tuesday, June 29:

R. continues Görres's Mysticism; it requires some effort, since the piling up of works of penance has something downright repellent about it, and the subject is handled with such crude realism.

Conference on the church carpet for me. Richter will probably not be given leave for the rehearsals! ... Studied with the children in the afternoon. Spent the evening with R. in the garden; looked at the house from the pergola; delight in it for the children's sake.
