Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 30, 1875

Overview

A letter from Hans in Hall in Tirol pierced me with fresh grief: he spoke of a devastating loss and a slight stroke, reopening old wounds at once. I answered with practical matters about the property I can leave the children and pleaded with him to abandon his plan of going to America, even as the first singers began to arrive.

Content

Wednesday, June 30:

In the morning a letter from Hans in Hall in Tirol; he informs me of his great, too great, loss and at the same time that he has had a slight stroke, the consequences of which he cannot foresee.

Once more a sword twisted in my heart and all my wounds torn open again - how often will this continue to occur?

I reply at once with details of the property I shall be able to leave to my children, and at the same time I implore him to give up his plan of going to America, to which he is still holding firm with the object of procuring a certain sum of money for the children.

In this painful state I have to welcome the first of our singers (Hill, the Lehmanns).
