Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 28, 1875

Overview

After lessons for the children and a visit from two playmates for Fidi, the afternoon turned unexpectedly rich with conversation about Albanians and Turks over Turkish coffee with Lalas. In the evening the musicians gathered, and R. proudly showed that he had sent Brahms a carefully preserved score of Das Rheingold in place of a damaged manuscript.

Lessons for the children, during them two boys for Fidi to play with (Erich Braun and Ludwig Reitzenstein). In the afternoon to Turkish coffee with friend Lalas; what he has to tell us about Albanians and Turks is highly interesting; the Albanians possess no state, but in their customs there is more culture than among ourselves.

In the evening the musicians. R. says that he has sent Herr Brahms the score of Das Rheingold as a well-preserved substitute for a badly kept manuscript, and once more, with amazement, we read through the letter with all its embroideries.
