Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 21, 1875

Overview

A bad night and troubling dreams set the tone, and breakfast is absorbed by complaints about the Reich authorities’ treatment of R.’s enterprise. Still, there are practical steps forward, including inquiries about singers and the hopeful work with Unger, while the arrival of treasured manuscripts and a gift case from the King of the Netherlands brings a melancholy reminder of family and legacy.

Content

Monday, June 21:

Wretched night with bad dreams; at breakfast discussed with R. all the behavior of the Reich authorities toward his undertaking. R. intends, after the rehearsals, to approach them again, but then, if nothing comes of it, the Americans. Inquiry to Frl. Tietjens, who is said to have sung Ortrud magnificently, whether she would take on Sieglinde.

In the afternoon arrival of the dressing case which the King of the Netherlands presented to my father and which he now gives to me, along with the manuscripts (Lohengrin, Tannhäuser), melancholy feelings.

R. continues to study with the singer Unger, some hope after much exertion! We drive to the theater; Brandt returns home with us; complaints about the lack of interest among the local people.
