Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 1, 1875

Overview

While working with the children, the diarist and R. discussed a Catholic rumor that the theater would burn down after the first performance, adding an ominous edge to the day. Unger and Rubinstein visited in the evening, but Unger’s hoarseness and only modest success in singing excerpts from Loge did little to resolve R.’s doubts, even as both enjoyed Lichtenberg and their reflections on Gorres.

Worked with the children. Talked with R. about a Catholic-party prophecy that the theater will be burned down after the first performance.

In the evening Herr Unger with Herr Rubinstein; the former, hoarse, sings extracts from Loge in a nice voice, but...

Much pleasure in Lichtenberg; R. continues with Görres; the human being as image of the cross pleases both him and me. The Pope as the realization of the Jewish concept of the Messiah.
