Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 2, 1875

Overview

Breakfast has now settled into the summerhouse routine, and the day moved between letters, lessons, and social calls. R. was amused and gratified by Gersdorff’s grateful reply about leaving state service for farming, but his midday session with Unger only deepened his sense of how impossible it is to carry out the work with such singers.

Content

Wednesday, June 2:

Early breakfast now always in the summerhouse. R. writes letters, among others to his friend Gersdorf, who has expressed his gratitude most wonderfully for the decisive advice to him to become a farmer, to give up his state career.

I work with the children and write to the boarding school.

In the evening a party, among others Baroness Staff. R. had Herr Unger with him at midday for study; in the course of it R. feels how crazy he is to try to perform his work with such singers!
