Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 27, 1875

Overview

The Ritters left, and arrangements were made for their son to come in August, while Brückwald arrived and discussions at the theater turned practical and tense. Lighting, the mystic chasm, curtains, and ceilings all had to be worked through, though Brandt’s decisiveness helped, and there was at least one encouraging note from Vienna about future royalty payments.

Thursday, May 27:

Departure of the Ritters; arrangements made for their son to come to us in August. Arrival of Brückwald, conference in the theater at which R. wants me to be present; with me there he finds it a pleasure, otherwise everything is an agony to him.

Lighting problems, the mystic chasm, curtain, ceilings are discussed. Brandt is the most resourceful and decisive. The management committee is worried!

In the afternoon a letter from the director in Vienna, Herr Jaimer: he has managed to secure royalty payments for us, 7 percent, from next August on. In the evening Herr Brückwald, Herr Brandt, and the engineer Staudt.
