Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 26, 1875

Overview

The morning included a visit to Haas’s shop for Oriental curiosities, followed by a string of social calls that left mixed but mostly favorable impressions. By evening, a disappointing ballet at the grand theater sharpened the writer’s skepticism about Vienna, which seemed to imitate Paris without becoming truly metropolitan.

Content

Friday, February 26:

With R. to Haas’s shop, looked at Oriental objects and bought a few things. R. visits his friend Princess Metternich, who despite her affected hatred of Germany receives him very joyfully and makes a decidedly pleasant impression on him. I visit Countess Andrassy with Marie Dönhoff, to find my extremely pleasant impression of her on our first meeting confirmed.

In the evening with R. to the ballet Robert und Bertrand—woeful impression! This magnificent, expensive theater, and the use that is made of it! It seems to me indisputable that Vienna can never become a metropolis. They imitate Paris, have display pillars of news, etc., which nobody stops to read!
