Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 25, 1875

Overview

At the second rehearsal there were fresh logistical blunders, this time with the harp parts, and thoughts of abandoning the Pest concert altogether. The orchestra’s discipline was fraying, but promising things were already taking shape; after a sitting at Lenbach’s and a glimpse of Marie Muchanoff’s portrait, the day closed under the weight of unpleasant domestic matters.

Thursday, February 25:

Second rehearsal; though the tubas are now there, Richter has forgotten to have the harp parts copied. Decision not to go to Pest, or at any rate not to give a concert there. The orchestra rebellious; since these people always have bad conductors, who can only get through by giving in, discipline has now completely vanished; they also have so much to do, concerts, in the theater every evening (playing to empty houses on account of the general bankruptcy), that their irritability can be excused. But much that is splendid is already emerging, and the orchestra is better than it was three years ago.

After the first rehearsal a sitting at Lenbach’s. Saw Marie Muchanoff’s portrait! Spent the evening quietly at home, also all day, unpleasant domestic news; instructions to be given.
