Tuesday, February 2:
R. once again dreamed of being treated disgracefully, indeed of even being put in prison; probably caused by our conversation about a curious sentencing recently passed here, a robber, murderer, etc., was sentenced only to several years in jail. R. is very much opposed to the jury system; and experience has taught us that no person improves in prison.
In his second dream R. saw me dancing a mazurka. R. somewhat better, but still tortured by the rash on his fingers.
News of Hans’s great success in Edinburgh as conductor and solo pianist. In the evening Herr Glatz, who gives some grounds for hope, after all. A letter from a confectioner’s assistant causes much merriment. R. very pleased with Gfrörer. He quotes to me Christ’s answer to the question whether he was the Messiah: 'If I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?' Unutterably sad and sublime.
