Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 19, 1874

Overview

The day feels politically tense in the background, but the household itself remains calm and intimate. While the children entertain everyone with songs, the evening ends with a quiet sense of contentment between the two of them.

Content

Sunday, July 19:

R. reads me the printed letter of an unnamed leading figure in the Catholic party to a French bishop, which sounds really ominous for Germany. In this connection R. quotes Cromwell’s words to his soldiers at Worcester: “Put your trust in God and keep your powder dry.”

We stay at home. R. works morning and afternoon, and I amuse myself with the children. They sing pretty songs, and then go on singing to us through the window.

In the evening R. and I enjoy being alone together.
