Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 25, 1874

Overview

The departures of Gersdorff and Hoffmann left the house quieter, but not calmer, since R. was worn down by visitors, worried about finances, and disappointed that Richter could stay only briefly. Another loss deepened the gloom when news came of Parson Tschudi’s death, tying the day to older memories of marriage and mortality.

Content

Monday, May 25:

Departure of friend Gersdorff and Herr Hoffmann. R. is not well, visitors put a strain on him, and he is also extremely upset that Richter can spare us only 2 months. He also finds the mounting costs of the household very disagreeable. Dull weather.

Parson Tschudi, the good man who married us, has now also died.
