Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 24, 1874

Overview

Whitsunday was marked by lingering company, including Hoffmann and Gersdorff, while she carried her grief inward and tried to remain composed. After the others left, she ended the day in a confidential exchange with the obstinate painter, a conversation that seems to have been as taxing as it was intimate.

Content

Sunday, May 24:

Whitsunday. Still with the lovely little woman, with Hoffmann and friend Gersdorff as well, in my heart sleeping pain.

In the afternoon the lovely lady departs; in the evening a confidential talk with the painter Hoffmann, who is very self-willed.
