Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 30, 1874

Overview

Cold weather and the mess of unpacking make the new household feel unsettled, and the day is further soured by an unwelcome letter that suggests intrigue around the King’s favor. R. keeps the slight to himself at first, leaving her aware that something unpleasant has been set in motion beneath the surface.

Thursday, April 30:

Good night, but today it is cold; busy arranging things, a lot of muddle.

In the afternoon R. receives an unpleasant letter from Councilor Duffiipp, to whom he had written just to reassure himself about the mood in which the King had shown his favor. It is clear from this letter that there has again been some intriguing there. R. at first says nothing at all to me about this unpleasant experience.
