Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 1, 1874

Overview

A brutal chill and a frightening injury to Rus cast a shadow over the day, while domestic tasks consume the little energy they have left. Even their usual pleasures are strained, as an evening attempt to read Shakespeare gives them too little comfort to carry on.

Content

Friday, May 1:

Hailstorms and cold; sad discovery that Rus has a bad injury, we fear for his life.

R. spends part of the morning replying to yesterday’s letter. Then getting the house in order takes up a lot of our time. There is little time for reading, scarcely even for our usual conversation.

In the evening we start The Two Gentlemen of Verona, but we do not take enough enjoyment in it to continue despite our tiredness.
