Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 6, 1874

Overview

Money worries pressed heavily on the household, and the conversation about the children’s future turned serious enough to justify sending the older ones to a more aristocratic institution. The day was threaded with fatigue and private concern rather than comfort. She ended by finding a rare solace in the moonlit sky, preferring that quiet beauty to human consolation.

Content

Friday, March 6:

R. works; I to the house with the children. Concern over the great amount of money being spent. In the afternoon there again, in the evening discussed the difficulties of the children with R.; resolve to send the eldest ones to an aristocratic institute. Spent the whole night in thoughts and worries of this kind.

It is indeed wonderful that a glance at the brightly shining moon should be able to bring me solace; no word from another human being could, I believe, be of help to me, but a flower, a moonbeam, comforts a sore heart.
